Is a marriage or divorce carried out abroad between Vietnamese citizens or between a Vietnamese citizen and a foreigner recognized in Vietnam?

Marriage between Vietnamese citizens or between a Vietnamese citizen and a foreigner that was registered at a competent foreign authority in accordance with the laws of that country will be recognized in Vietnam.  If, at the time of marriage, the Vietnamese citizen did not violate the laws and regulations of Vietnam concerning the marital condition or the prohibited marriage categories the marriage will be considered valid.

If there is a violation of Vietnamese law concerning the marital condition when the marriage takes place, but this violation is remedied by the time of the request for recognition in Vietnam, or the recognition of that marriage will benefit or protect the interests of the woman and children, that marriage will also be recognized in Vietnam.

A divorce between Vietnamese citizens or between a Vietnamese citizen and a foreigner that has been resolved by a foreign Court or other competent foreign authority will be recognized in Vietnam if there is no petition challenging the divorce in Vietnam.
