“A friend declared to a still childless me some years ago: “Breastfeeding is harder than childbirth.” After two children and almost three years of breastfeeding between them, I get it.
Breastfeeding is the ultimate Goldilocks tale. Those who are unable to produce enough milk often feel guilty for not being able to provide for their child. Those who produce too much face increased health risks, including infections, and the potential embarrassment of an untimely milk leak. Insufficiently hydrated or stressed? That could impact your milk supply too.
It is also hard work. Nursing mothers must express milk or breastfeed between four and eight times daily, for 20 to 30 minutes each time. Throw a job into the mix and the juggle gets more intense. For example, working mothers must contend with the logistics of commuting with breast milk and pumping equipment, finding time and space to pump, and simply having the energy for it while working and raising a family.” – The Straits Times
