The Power of Perseverance When Things Get Hard

Author
Stephen Le

This is where most people quit

When we hear the word grit, we often think of resilience in the face of adversity. Yet grit is about far more than simply enduring difficult circumstances. It is the ability to remain committed to a meaningful goal even when progress is slow, recognition is absent, and the outcome is uncertain.

Many worthwhile pursuits begin with enthusiasm

Anybody can start a new thing. Whether it is building a business, developing expertise in a profession, writing a book, or learning a new skill, the early stages are energizing because improvement comes quickly and each milestone feels rewarding.

Eventually, however, almost every journey reaches a stage where progress becomes less visible, setbacks become more frequent, and persistence matters more than motivation.

It is during this period that grit quietly separates those who eventually succeed from those who choose to walk away.

Keep showing up

Author James Clear offers a compelling example of this principle. Long before Atomic Habits became one of the bestselling books in the world, he spent years publishing two articles every week on his website.

His readership grew slowly, one article at a time, and there was no certainty that the effort would ever amount to anything significant. By the time the book was released, he had already spent years refining his ideas, building trust with readers, and developing his craft.

What many perceived as an overnight success was, in reality, the culmination of countless hours of consistent work that few people ever saw.

5,126 attempts later

And then there’s James Dyson’s story. Before his bagless vacuum cleaner became a commercial success, Dyson built 5,126 prototypes over 15 years. Each unsuccessful attempt taught him something new about the product he was trying to create, bringing him one step closer to a workable solution.

It would have been easy to conclude after hundreds, or even thousands, of failed prototypes that the idea simply wasn’t worth pursuing. Instead, he viewed each iteration as part of the process.

Today, Dyson is a global technology company, but its success was built on years of persistence and continuous refinement. Today, many want success without hard work.

What the bamboo teaches us

Now let’s look at nature. A bamboo tree spends several years developing an extensive root system beneath the surface before any significant growth appears above the ground.

To anyone watching, it may seem as though nothing is happening. Yet beneath the soil, the foundations are quietly strengthening. When the conditions are right, the bamboo grows rapidly, creating the illusion of sudden success when it is, in fact, the product of years of unseen preparation.

My Advice? Don’t stop too soon

If you’re feeling discouraged, thinking everyone is progressing a lot faster than you are, remember that breakthroughs aren’t sudden events. They are simply the visible outcome of years of perseverance that nobody else ever saw.

While dramatic success stories capture our attention, lasting success is usually built through everyday ordinary choices repeated over time.

Perhaps that is the true power of grit

It reminds us that meaningful achievement is seldom determined by who begins with the greatest talent, but by who continues when the path becomes difficult and the rewards are still out of sight.

If your own progress feels slower than you had hoped, remember that visible results are only one measure of growth. The habits you are building, the judgment you are developing, and the resilience you are strengthening may be laying foundations whose value will only become apparent much later. So my encouragement is, keep going!

Sincerely,
